Salt Lake City, Utah | Guardian Pest Control
The Pioneers entered Salt Lake Valley in July 1847. Through the summer and fall of that first year, the pioneers planted several thousand acres of winter wheat. Due to a mild winter and early thaw in 1848, the pioneer settlers were able to plant more wheat and an additional 3,000 acres of corn and other vegetables.
In late May of 1848 hordes of insects began to invade and destroy the crops planted that early spring by the Utah pioneers. These insects, later dubbed the “Mormon Cricket” were not actually true crickets, but rather a member of the katydid family. Although the early pioneer farmers used defensive measures to battle the hordes of crickets invading their fields, they had very little success.
By early June, relief came in the form of seagulls. The seagulls came in large flocks and began to devour the crickets. Although the crop losses were severe, the seagulls played an important role in the survival of the early Utah pioneers.
